Due to its high altitude, Colorado has a very dry climate, which is why it’s not hard to see people walking around with a water bottle in hand. Everyone has their own preferences on what they want to use to stay hydrated, and sometimes even trends find their way into the industry.

The most common water bottles to find around the school would be metal ones.

“I think that metal bottles are more popular,” shared sophomore Trevor Nichols. “Most water bottles that usually become popular are metal, like Stanley and now Owala bottles, but you don’t really see many plastic water bottles become trendy.”

It is very easy to spot a few Owala bottles here and there throughout the school.

“I have a dark blue and pink Owala,” commented sophomore Bella Ayala. “The metal bottle keeps the water cold for longer.”

While they might not always be the trend, many people prefer to have a plastic water bottle instead of metal.

“I have a 48-ounce Nalgene,” stated junior Eva Richling. “It’s plastic, and it’s known for its outdoorsiness, so it was made to be, like, thrown off a bus and be okay.”

Much like their laptops, many decide to put stickers all over their water bottles, using it as a way to show off who they are and their personality.

“I put a lot of stickers that I get from traveling to other places,” explained Nichols. “I don’t like it when there are too many stickers on the water bottle though, because you can’t see what every sticker means to that person.”

Another deciding factor in this water bottle battle is the mouthpiece that the water bottle can have.

“I like the open water bottle because you can get the most amount of water in the least amount of time,” Richling shared. “But I also like the small mouth water bottle because they’re easy to drink if you’re going on a car ride.”

The type of water bottle can also be influenced by how cool a person would want their water to be.

“I like having ice in my water,” said Nichols. “It keeps my water cool, and sometimes I like to chew on the ice.”

While some like their water to be nice and cold, others feel that ice may be a bit too cold for them.

“I don’t like my water being too cold,” stated junior Hunter Hobbs. “It makes my mouth feel icky.”

The loud noises that metal water bottles make can be a deal-breaker for many.

“You always know when somebody has a metal water bottle,” Richling commented. “When it hits the corner of a desk, or falls off a surface, or it drops in the middle of a hallway, it’s so loud.”

For others though, they do not see the noise as that big of a deal.

“[Metal water bottles] can be equally quiet if you use them right, and they can make equally as much noise as plastic bottles,” explained Ayala.

Sometimes the type of water bottle one has is determined by the small things, such as texture, or how it makes the water taste.

“Metal is superior to plastic because it makes my water taste better,” Hobbs shared. “Water stored in a specific material will taste better. For example, glass is the best material to store water, and then it’s metal, and then it’s plastic.
