Under the blazing lights of a runway, JA's fashion show left the audience in awe as students in the fashion class showed off their intricate designs. From striking avant-garde designs to timeless elegance, the event celebrated creativity, craftsmanship, and the ever-evolving art of style.

Many students who enter the fashion class have no idea how to sew, but they have to learn how to make an outfit from scratch for the fashion show.

“The class goes from just warm-ups and not knowing anything about sewing to making full on dresses and outfits for a show that you have to put on in the end of the quarter,” stated fashion class teacher, Mrs. Garcia.

Students design outfits from just intricate designs on shirts to full-on detailed dresses.

“I designed a dress with a baby blue and white color palette and a butterfly theme. The top was a pair of massive blue butterfly wings that covered the entire chest, with the skirt being a layered piece starting with a silky blue material for the base, topped with strips of sheer white fabric around the entire waist, and a final layer of sheer blue fabric decorated with small butterflies stitched on,” said sophomore Kenya Larsen.

Some students model their own outfits but some will choose a model to wear their outfits for them.

“I thought that having someone else model for me was easier to sew and I wouldn’t have to deal with trying on my outfit myself,” stated sophomore Nora Dutton.

Although it might be easier to have one of your friends model, there are some challenges that occur when having someone else model your outfit.

“My model was very hard to get ahold of sometimes because she had a very busy schedule, and when I did get time with her, she would always rush me to go quicker,” expressed sophomore Olivia Schexnider.

Along with challenges with models, challenges occur when sewing the outfit.

“I had some trouble with my sewing machine quite a few times, where it would either just break down, or sometimes it would even eat or rip the fabric. I also struggled to attach all the layers to the waist, and there were several times where I just had to entirely restart a layer and I would spend hours seam ripping,” expressed Larsen.

Although there are challenges there are certain parts that might be easier or a favorite part of the outfit.

“The most fun part [of my dress] was making the solvy that went in the middle of the dress, I liked how intricate and intriguing it made my dress look. My other favorite part is the flowers, flower petals, and pearls all over; it was challenging to make but I loved how it looked on my dress!” said Dutton.

The night of the fashion show went wonderfully, although the prep of the show took time to coordinate.

Garcia expressed, “I think it [the fashion show] went wonderful. There was a little problem with the DJ with music and coordinating that when the models walked out, but I think everyone did amazing, and I think it was brave of the models to go up and stand in front of everyone!”
