Giggles and Groaners

Everyone’s heard a groaner or two at some point- jokes like the classic, “Hi hungry, I’m Dad,” have become a common and well-known form of speaking. That’s no different at JA, as many students have their own personal favorite dad jokes. Almost everyone enjoys hearing a funny or well-timed dad joke, but some students think that they can get to be too much.

“Yeah, I think they’re funny,” stated junior Ari Vandewart. “My dad and I tell a lot of them, so I’ve kinda been around them my whole life. Occasionally, they’ll get on my nerves, but for the most part, I like hearing them.”

While Vandewart and their dad enjoy telling these jokes, they recognize that they can occasionally get annoying. However, they aren’t the only ones that feel this way; senior Chris Meier shares their sentiment.

“My friends and I tell dad jokes all the time,” recounted Chris. “Some of them are more like inside jokes, but we all enjoy them. I do think, though, that if somebody tells the same joke over and over it can get annoying.”

Like Vandewart, Meier thinks that dad jokes, while being funny most of the time, can eventually get annoying if they’re told for too long; in moderation, though, they can add some humor to a boring conversation. Junior Tristan Abell, a huge proponent of dad jokes, feels similarly.

“I think dad jokes are so funny, they never really get on my nerves. My favorite is probably ‘Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9,’ but there are a ton that I love no matter how many times I hear them.”

A big fan of dad jokes, Abell thinks that dad jokes are always amazing. He’s always got one in his back pocket regardless of the situation, and is always the first to think of a quip for a funny scenario. Similarly to Abell, sophomore Kris Rawlins is a huge fan of dad jokes and cites them as an easy way to make her laugh.

“I love dad jokes, especially any of them that have some kind of wordplay-related humor. They’re an easy way to make me laugh, and I can’t say I ever really get bored with them.”

Rawlins agrees with Abell that dad jokes are pretty timeless; they never fail to elicit a laugh from her, and she thinks that clever wordplay (Why’d the bicycle fall down? It was two-tired!) is always hilarious. Sophomore Tate Stalder couldn’t agree more.

“Yeah, my dad tells dad jokes all the time. One of his I hear the most is the one he asks whenever my siblings wear torn jeans: ‘Did you get those half off?’ Honestly, I think they’re great!”

Clearly, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t like dad jokes at least a little, and with how often they’re told, that’s probably for the best. Just be sure you don’t overdo it.
