Love's in the Air
February 14th, also known as Valentine's Day, is a widely celebrated holiday observed by many people worldwide.
The adored holiday about roses, chocolates, and handwritten notes. February 14th, also known as Valentine's Day, is a widely celebrated holiday observed by many people worldwide. At Jefferson Academy, it transforms an ordinary day into a special one with bustling emotions coming from everybody.
The students and staff at JA celebrate Valentine’s Day by expressing their appreciation not only for their significant others, but also for their friends.
“When I think of Valentine's Day at Jefferson Academy, the first thing that comes to mind is probably my girlfriend, and then I think that the holiday is just about loving the person closest to you, and the people that aren’t in relationships get to show that in a more friendly way,” said Junior Peyton Sewell.
The holiday is a great opportunity for lovers to really show their feelings for one another with flowers, a nice date, and spending quality time together.
“I love seeing most people receive a Valentine, and for me, I usually expect to see a lot of people handing out valentines to their partner or even people receiving candy grams and such. It's fun to coordinate a plan with a friend to get each other Valentine’s Day gifts,” gushed Sophomore Nyla DeLalio.
Though the holiday is mainly celebrated by lovers, it doesn’t only apply to them. Some students simply enjoy the festive atmosphere, and others view the holiday as unnecessary and would rather show their appreciation at all times. Despite the mixed feelings, students still love the holiday. From public exchanges to social media posts. Many still celebrate Valentine's Day platonically amongst their peers.
“I definitely do feel included on Valentine's Day. I don’t really think it’s that big of a thing at school, but since my friends and I get stuff for each other, I definitely do,” Senior Sofia Araujo expressed.
As Valentine's Day passes, it leaves behind more than candy wrappers and wilted flowers. For many, it serves as a loving reminder that somebody appreciates and loves you, as well as a reminder to appreciate somebody you care for.
“Showing love at JA is doing the little things for someone at school, carrying their backpack, holding something heavy for them, or just simply giving them a gift that's heartfelt and meaningful to them,” exclaims Sewell, “ and if everyone does it, it’s community love.”
