As the lights start to dim and the songs in the musical start to play, the JA community starts to feel excitement as students from JA begin their performance of Legally Blonde.
Legally Blonde is a musical that follows the main character, Elle Woods, and the challenges she faces at Harvard Law School with stereotypes and self-doubt. In the end, she pursues her dreams in her signature color: pink.
Abigail Goltz, Elle Woods in the Legally Blonde performance, is feeling optimistic and excited about her big role in the show.
“I’m super excited. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s a lot. I’m starting to kind of come into Elle,” Goltz mentioned.
Another main character in the show, Emmett Forrest, is played by Ashton Elder, who is excited to debut his first big role.
“This is the biggest role I have done, so it’s a little nerve-wracking, but it’s also a lot of fun,” Elder stated.
Picking a show for the musical can be complicated; many different considerations go into picking a musical.
“Usually students will tell me that they’re in the fall show or the spring show, so I like to pick shows that I know students can do. I also like to consider different styles, like one show can be a more family friendly show like Spongebob and for the next musical I like to pick a more ‘edgier’ show to do,” said the director, Ms. Grace.
The music inside a show is one of the most important parts of a performance, especially in a musical. The actors need to learn all of the music for the show so they are prepared.
“Before going into it, I didn’t really care much about it [the music]. But then, I started listening to it more and more, and I really started to like the music,” Elder said.
Since rehearsals have started, the show starts off rough, but over time, the show starts to become better.
“I think rehearsals are going fine, I mean it's just the start of class so we're still doing the groundwork and haven’t gotten to choreography yet, but I think at the moment rehearsals are going good,” expressed sophomore Todd Short.
Being in a theatre performance can be very fun, especially with friends.
“Basically, all the main characters are my best friends,” Goltz commented. “It’s so much fun being able to do all these songs and dances with everybody.”
While there are many feelings, there’s always some kind of excitement about the musicals when the time finally comes around.
“I have wanted to do this show for a long time, and finally I decided if we’re not going to do it now, then who knows when we’ll be able to do this show any other time,” Ms. Grace explained.
Tech week is a chaotic and stressful week, but it is also when the show starts to fully come together. It’s a big rehearsal of exactly how the show will run, so it’s almost like a practice run.
“I really like tech week. I love hanging out with my friends for hours on end, and everybody is horribly sleep deprived,” Goltz said.
Seeing a whole production come together can be one of the best parts of theatre. It’s a satisfying ending to all of the hard work everyone has put into the show.
“I’m really excited to kind of see how the whole thing comes together, especially with how much work people are putting into it. I think we’re going to have a really good show,” Elder declared.
On the other hand, some parts of putting the show together are the least favorite part for a student.
“My least favorite part is probably when we have to sit around while there are other parts of the show that I’m not in going on. I also don’t like just working on the harmonies in the songs,” explained Short.
There is a lot of work going into the show to make it happen.
“We’re going to be amazing, and even though we may seem scared and like 'oh my gosh,' it will be ready and it will be amazing and it will be something that people will remember for a long time!” expressed Ms. Grace.
