As the third quarter of the academic year at Jefferson Academy High School comes to an end, students are experiencing a variety of emotions. From excitement and renewed motivation to stress and anxiety, this period brings a unique blend of feelings as students navigate through classes and extracurricular activities.
“Overall, I'd say my experience has been pretty good. I've got to be in new classes that I wasn't previously in, and it’s fun to experience different friend groups along with different teachers,” sophomore Sofia Delalio stated.
There are highlights of being exposed to new environments and social circles. Delalio enjoys the novelty of new classes and the opportunity to interact with different friend groups and teachers. Despite these positive aspects, third quarter has had its fair share of challenges. Transitioning back to school after a long winter break has been tough, and many students have found it difficult to regain their spark.
“The most challenging part of quarter 3 is staying motivated,” sophomore Grace Kingen admitted.
The pressure to keep up with assignments and prepare for upcoming tests makes this period particularly stressful. Balancing academics with the desire to enjoy the remaining school year often leads to a struggle in maintaining focus and productivity.
“My friends keep me motivated because they suggest finishing work so then I go along with it,” Kingen mentioned.
Kingen suggests that the support and influence of friends play a crucial role in overcoming this obstacle. Friends proposing to finish tasks or work together has created a “positive peer pressure” that Kingen says helps her stay on track, shining light on the collaborative effort and how it not only makes the workload more manageable, but also adds an element of camaraderie.
Some students said they have not only gained motivation by friendly encouragement, but from outside factors as well.
“I think I’ve had more motivation and effort now compared to previously because of having to balance school and sports, both at a much higher level than before,” explained sophomore Kat Shadrach.
It’s clear that while balancing school and sports has pushed students to work harder, there’s also a strong sense of excitement for what’s to come.
“I feel ready for the end of the school year. I’m excited to not have work to stress about and be in summer,” sophomore Mathew O’Donnell explained.
O’Donnell expressed a sense of readiness and relief as the school year comes to a close. The excitement about not having schoolwork to stress over shows a long-awaited need for a break and a chance to recharge; it highlights the anticipation of summer as a time for relaxation and freedom, which students see as a reward for overcoming the demands of the school year.
