There be Witches
“One big challenge is getting all the emotions right to make the play believable,” said Sofi Araujo.
As the lights begin to dim, you start to feel a chill in the air with a new style of production put on by Jefferson Academy’s very own drama club, A Voice in the Dark.
JA’s drama club has been working hard, perfecting their roles, and making the play intriguing for people to enjoy.
“I’m very excited to be in the play,” expressed Junior Alyssa Grigsby. “I like hanging out with everybody in drama club, and I like being in drama club and just acting in general.”
There are multiple different roles to the show that are all unique additions that were picked specifically for each person.
Sophomore Ava Swartzendruber stated, “I’m very excited about my role since this is my first-ever lead role, and I’m very proud of myself that I got the role that I wanted.”
Compared to the plays in the past, this year's play is different, adding a new style to drama club.
“This year we are doing a drama, rather than the comedies we have done in the past,” mentioned senior Aiden Hohnstein, “but [the play] is also more historically based, rather than the other plays in the past that have been a lot of fiction.”
With new opportunities on the horizon for the JA drama club, many students take note of the challenges a new genre can bring.
“Doing a drama is definitely more difficult compared to the other plays that we have done in the past. One big challenge is getting all the emotions right to make the play believable,” said senior Sofi Araujo.
With this new style of play, there are mixed feelings about whether the staff should have just stuck to a comedy.
“I like the play. It's different from what I’ve done in the past. I feel like I could have a bigger part, but I like my part and I get to do things that I might not have gotten to do [before],” expressed Grigsby.
Because of the new genre and topic, the play could be harder to advertise to students.
“I think that we might have a hard time advertising. I feel like we put posters up and announce it on Instagram, but I think we always have a hard time advertising,” mentioned Araujo, “so I feel like this play would be like the others, especially since this one isn’t as well known.”
Since rehearsing a drama requires more time, the drama club has been going until 5:30pm to allow extra time to rehearse. However, there could be additional rehearsals to make sure the play is the best that it can be.
“It’s definitely a little more inconvenient, but it’s more fun and we get to hang out with the cast more,” stated freshman Maddie Sayre.
Everyone in the drama club is working very hard to perfect the show to make it one of the best plays yet.
“The play is definitely a different style, so it's going to make things more interesting, but I think it will be a fun play to put on!” expressed Grigsby.
