As spring approaches, Jefferson Academy’s athletes are lacing up their shoes and getting ready for a season full of action. JA’s track and soccer teams are buzzing with excitement for the season ahead.
For Finn Bullis, a junior track and field athlete, the shift from soccer to track in the offseason gives him the perfect balance.
"I wanted to take a break from soccer, but still wanted to stay athletic," Bullis shared.
Bullis, who competes in the triple jump, long jump, and sprints, has set some ambitious goals for the season.
“I want to make it to state in the triple jump and beat my personal records in the other events,” he shared.
Bryce Richards, a fellow junior sprinter, is equally driven to succeed. He hasn’t qualified in previous seasons, but this year, he’s confident.
“I’m excited for the season to start. I’ve been working hard, and I want to make it to state this year,” Richards said. “I'm prepared and ready to put it all on the line.”
For the track team, success isn’t just about individual achievement.
“We have a great group of people, and we're aiming to keep Jefferson Academy’s reputation as a strong team intact,” Richards claimed.
Meanwhile, the girls’ soccer team is also gearing up for a competitive season. With a strong group, the team is filled with energy and determination.
“We have a team that is very excited to be here and we are very prepared for this season,” said senior Rylin Chichirico.
They’re focused on building strong team chemistry and refining their skills to make this season one to remember. Preseason workouts have been tough but productive, and the girls are ready for the challenge.
“The preseason has been grueling, but we’re pushing through,” said senior Kate Krout.
Despite losing some key seniors last season, the team’s morale is high. The team knows that mental resilience will play an important role this season.
”I need to stay strong mentally throughout this season even when things get tough,” determined Chichirico.
The squad is focused not just on physical endurance but also on staying sharp and composed under pressure. Much like track athletes Bullis and Richards, the soccer players have their sights set on personal and team goals and are ready to face the season head-on. Balancing sports with academics can be a challenge, but for both the track athletes and the soccer team, staying organized is key. Bullis, for example, has a full course load, along with his commitment to Key Club.
“It’s tough, but I make it work,” Bullis admitted. “Track has always been a positive part of my life, so I stay up late when I need to.”
As the season kicks off, the excitement is growing. Both teams are ready to show what they’ve got. Whether it’s pushing the limits on the track or working together to outplay opponents, Jefferson Academy’s athletes are ready to make this season one to remember.
"A lot of people are excited to come back and put as much effort as possible into winning, especially the seniors. I mean, all of us want to win state,” Krout explained.
