Under the Lights

The lights blaring, the crowd cheering, and the court feels like the experience of a lifetime. Jefferson Academy’s basketball teams stepped onto the court at Ball Arena on February 9 for a game that would prove to be a memorable milestone for the student athletes. The girls celebrated a victory while the boys competed in a hard-fought match that ultimately resulted in loss.
Despite different outcomes, players expressed excitement and pride in representing Jefferson Academy on such a large stage.
“It was fun to play on that court with my teammates," freshman Ally Proctor explained. “Being in that stadium, where professional teams play, was awesome.”
Ball Arena is an annual opportunity for high school athletes all across Colorado, but for the seniors of Jefferson Academy, this game marked a closing chapter. Senior Avah Berlin agreed that the game represented both pride and nostalgia for the basketball teams, especially for those who had dedicated four years to the program.
“It’s an amazing experience no matter what grade you are in, but we’re sad that this was our last time,” Berlin added. “I’m very proud. It’s been a great four years.”
While the seniors reflected on their journeys, the underclassmen on the team saw the game as an opportunity to improve and adjust. Freshman Mennonna Kane observed how playing basketball with her friends fostered personal growth.
“I’m really passionate about [basketball],” Kane expressed. “It builds good character, and we did a good job as a team. I’ve learned how to be a good leader and encourage other people.”
Many of the players described basketball as an enriching experience that strengthened their confidence and leadership skills. To them, the sport created a sense of belonging connecting the student athletes through shared goals, and strong community support.
“Community support is big,” junior Caidence Hodges elaborated. “There are many people who come to our games regularly, like the parents and grandparents of our team, who really support us, and that helps my game tremendously.”
As the seniors move forward and the younger players continue their journey, the annual Ball Arena game remains a symbolic checkpoint, one that marks both the beginning and end of what lies ahead.
“One thing that basketball has taught me,” Berlin reminisced, “is to enjoy those moments while they last, and not take anything for granted.”
