Creative Chaos

Cars may be wrapped in plastic, hallways could fill with balloons, and classrooms might be transformed overnight. At Jefferson Academy, senior pranks are expected to once again turn an ordinary school day into a scene of surprise and chaos as the tradition makes a comeback.
The senior prank has not taken place in several years, but with a new administration in place, the tradition is returning. Students say the shift has opened the door for this year’s class to bring it back.
Even with the excitement, planning a senior prank as a whole class comes with its own challenges. With so many different ideas and opinions, seniors say it can be difficult to settle on one plan that everyone agrees on.
“I think that we could fill a whole stairwell up with balloons,” senior Chase Wittman said. “It’s non-destructive, playful, and funny to see a ridiculous amount of balloons in the stairwell.”
Ideas like this reflect what many seniors are aiming for — something memorable without crossing any lines.
For teachers, especially those who have been at Jefferson Academy for a long time, the return of the senior prank brings mixed reactions. Some remember pranks from years ago, while others are unsure what to expect after such a long break.
“While I understand the desire to have a senior prank, I can say I am glad it is gone. It got to the point that it wasn’t a prank; it was about how much destruction could be done and leave others to clean up the mess,” Mr. Kirkley said. “I once had my expensive game boards set up over the toilets. If those are damaged, I would be furious.”
Staff members say their main concern is making sure the prank stays safe and does not cause damage or major disruptions to the school day. At the same time, some acknowledge that senior pranks can be a fun tradition if handled responsibly.
Many seniors say they are thinking carefully about the kind of legacy they want to leave. They recognize that their actions could impact whether the tradition continues for future classes, whether that be a fun or more tame prank.
No one knows exactly what the Class of 2026 will do yet, but it’s clear that the return of the senior prank has already made an impact. Whether simple or elaborate, this year’s prank will likely set the tone for classes in the years to come.
