Homework or Overwork?
Do I have too much homework? Is the school day longer than it really needs to be?
You lean back in your chair and sigh. You’ve finally finished your homework after a long day of classes, and you’re exhausted. Then a thought crosses your mind: Do I have too much homework? Is the school day longer than it really needs to be?
Many students ask themselves this after studying and homework. Some believe schools focus more on how much work students do rather than how much they learn. Long classes can make it harder for students to focus, especially when they’re tired.
“[I struggle most with the] length of classes, we have classes that are an hour and a half,” said freshman Eden Obert.
Excessive work can lead to burnout. Research shows that anywhere from a five to sixty minute break in the school day can increase energy productivity and ability to focus. While the block schedule can be annoying for some, many others enjoy it.
“I like how it’s oriented to have two classes before lunch,” shared Emery Dowey.
Students notice math and chemistry give a lot of homework, this suggests that a lot of students feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that they have to complete, especially in specific classes.
“Definitely math and chemistry [give the most homework,]” junior Logan Melby shared.
While breaks like lunch help students recharge, many still struggle to balance school, homework, and personal time. Activities, hobbies, and rest are important for a healthy routine, especially with how work-heavy JA can be.
“I do believe that this school gives more work than other schools,” stated Melby.
While students have a lot of work to finish for school, it is always important to make sure to put yourself first.
“If you overload yourself, you need to be okay with things ‘just being good enough,’” explained senior Jayden Hughes. “It’s not worth it to sacrifice your health just for good grades.”
