More than Hair
From vibrant hues to muted tones, students use hair dye and bleach to both express individuality and experiment with their appearance.
For many individuals, hair dye plays a very important role in their appearance, serving as both canvases for self expression and records through personal experiences. People often choose colors based on trends, personal preferences, or the desire to have fun and try something new. Students and staff alike enjoy experimenting with multiple designs and styles.
“People should have the freedom to do whatever they want with their hair,” Ms. Larsen emphasized. “What’s most important is what we think of ourselves.”
Some students even carefully plan their outfits around their hair color, making it an essential part of their appearance.
“I like to match purple shoes with my hair,” freshman Maddie Sayre explained. “Certain colors look great together, and others don’t.”
Beyond aesthetics, some students believe their hair is a reflection of their personal history, marking different phases of their lives.
“I like looking at pictures of myself between each dye and reflecting,” junior Nora Dutton shared. “It’s a good way to look back on past experiences.”
For others, hair color and style play major roles in how they present themselves to the world.
“I like to take liberties with my appearance, and I value self-expression,” senior Mal Memon noted. “My hair is the most distinctive part of my appearance and it’s a huge part of my identity.”
Hair dye also boosts confidence, giving people control over their appearance. Many agree that changing their hair is a worthwhile and meaningful way to express who they are without using their voices.
“You only live once,” Memon said, “and it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.”
